The broad research community of funders, academic institutions, and Federal agencies has begun to focus on Open Science as a central, guiding principle of scientific research. Open Science is particularly helpful in ecosystem research, which frequently must incorporate data from many individual areas of scientific study in order to understand how a complex system functions. A central tenet of Open Science is making research results and data sets open to all, but implementing that vision often requires changes in how data are collected, stored, and ultimately used in environmental research or decision-making. Given the direct ties between ecosystem science and both the generation and use of Open Science, the Association of Ecosystem Research Centers (AERC) has invited leaders representing different sectors of the research community to address the promise of Open Science. The speakers will provide insights into the implementation of an Open Science perspective and its value in meeting the challenges and mandates faced by those charged with understanding and managing ecosystems.
