AIBS Endorses NSF for the Future Act

AIBS has endorsed bipartisan legislation introduced by House Science Committee Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) and Ranking Member Frank Lucas (R-OK) along with Subcommittee on Research and Technology Chairwoman Haley Stevens (D-MI) and Ranking Member Michael Waltz (R-FL) to expand the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) mission and budget.

The National Science Foundation for the Future Act (H.R. 2225) proposes doubling NSF’s budget over five years and creating a new Directorate for Science and Engineering Solutions (SES) that will enable NSF to accelerate the translation of science and technology into solutions to society’s major challenges.

“AIBS deeply appreciates the collaborative and consultative process utilized by the Committee in developing this measure,” reads the letter of support. “We thank you for your thoughtful approach in soliciting and incorporating input and feedback from the scientific community and other stakeholders.”

AIBS praised a number of provisions in the bill, including the emphasis on sustained support for biological research collections, increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion, and increased support for the Graduate Research Fellowship Program.
